Webinar: Worker agency in sustainability transitions
Time: November 17 at 16.00-17.30
Place: Zoom
Welcome to the webinar on worker agency in sustainability transitions, with insights from a film project exploring the closure of the Hanasaari coal power plant. In her keynote, Professor Vivian Price from California State University, Dominguez Hills, will share her thoughts on what she has learned through film projects and collaboration with unions and environmental groups about nature-work relations in sustainability transitions. The keynote will be followed by a commentary from Eeva Houtbeckers, Senior Researcher at Tampere University of Applied Sciences, and a discussion with the audience.
iVivian Price: Video dialogue as a method to promote worker agency in sustainability transitions
Price’s latest film project Oppitunteja Hanaraasta/Lessons from Hanasaari is a collaboration with the Trade Union for the Public and Welfare Sectors (JHL) and environmental groups to explore the tensions, contradictions and unity between environmentalist and labour perspectives through film. Documenting the story of the closure of the Hanasaari coal power plant in Helsinki, the film asks: What role could workers and unions play in determining a transition away from fossil fuels?
The audience will see a trailer for the film and learn about Price’s use of video dialogue as a method to promote worker agency and communication between advocacy groups.
Vivian Price (Ph.D.) is Professor at California State University, Dominguez Hills and a visiting researcher at the University of Helsinki. She was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Liverpool, a Fulbright specialist in Norway and a consultant for the University of Leeds. Price focuses her research and films on labour and climate justice. She collaborated with community activists in Watts, California and professional colleagues to organize environmental justice campaigns combining art and activism. Price has directed three feature length documentary films, Hammering It Out, Transnational Tradeswomen and Harvest of Loneliness, and shorts, Talking Union Talking Climate, and Voices from the green transition. Her latest film is a collaboration with JHL, the Finnish public sector union, Oppitunteja Hanaraasta/Lessons from Hanasaari.
